A Fuel Treatment that Improves Cold Weather Starting and RunningWhile Enhancing Overall Engine Performance.

DSL-5 is an ashless, non-metallic advanced multi-functional diesel fueltreatment compounded to improve the following functions and properties ofdiesel fuel at low treatment levels and low cost.

The multi-functional formulation of DSL-5 includes a water controlagent, cold flow improver, detergent, dispersant and a lubricant.

The five basic components in DSL-5 combat the major problem areas of dieselfuel performance. As each of those problems is reduced, diesel engines runmore efficiently.

The water control agent in DSL-5 removes moisture from fuel tanks, linesand bulk storage tanks.
Water droplets are broken down into miniscule particles that disperseinto the fuel and are removed during combustion. Cold weather icing is eliminatedand rust and corrosion are prevented. Removal of water stops microorganismgrowth and prevents sludge.

The cold flow improver in DSL-5 lowers the pour point and improves pumpabilityof fuel at lower temperatures.
Engines start, and operate more efficiently in much colder environmentsthan normally possible. There is less need to keep diesel engines operatingat idle, thus decreasing fuel consumption and reducing emissions.

The detergent in DSL-5 cleans fuel related deposits in engines.
The buildup of deposits such as gum, varnishes and carbon residues in combustionchambers, ring grooves, injectors and other engine parts decreases the operatingefficiency of engines. The formation of carbonaceous deposits on the injectornozzle tips can adversely alter the spray pattern of the fuel. An indicationthat such an alteration has taken place often is evidenced by increasedfuel consumption, increased exhaust emissions, decreased injector life,excessive deposits in the combustion chamber and exhaust ports, and stickingvalves and piston rings. Regular use of small quantities of DSL-5 removesthese deposits. Operating efficiency is increased, engine life is prolongedand fuel consumption and exhaust emissions are decreased. DSL-5 containsno alcohol that can injure vital engine components and seals.

The dispersant in DSL-5 breaks down fuel related sludge and oxidationresidue particles.
The particles are broken down to less than a micrometer in diameter andpass through the filtration and injector systems without causing any pluggingproblems.

The lubricant in DSL-5 reduces engine component wear.
Engines last longer, run more efficiently for longer periods and performbetter on low sulfur/low aromatic diesel fuel. Tests prove seal damage associatedwith the new low sulfur fuel is eliminated.

A Summary of an Engine Dynamometer Test Using Untreated Fuel
and DSL-5 Treated Fuel

The engine used was a Detroit Diesel Model 3-71. This is a 213 cu in. 3cylinder 2 stroke engine coupled to a Heenan & Froude Hydraulic Dynamometeras a permanent installation.
The fuel used was a #2 distillate with a specific gravity of .8318 and acetane rating of 52.
Before the first test with untreated fuel was run the engine had 18.5 hoursof operation and showed a significant layer of carbon deposit on the #1injector which was removed for inspection. This would indicate a similarcarbon layer in the combustion chamber.
After the untreated test was run, the fuel was treated with a double doseof DSL-5 and the engine was run under varying loads at 1500 RPM's for aperiod of 5 hours. After this cleanup phase the #1 injector was again removedand found to be completely free of carbon.
The engine was then run on fuel treated with a single dose of DSL-5 forthe second test.

In conclusion, DSL-5 is a diesel fuel additive that reduces emissions,lowers fuel and maintenance costs and increases engine performance.

DSL-5 Case Histories

James River Paper Corp. uses DSL-5 in diesel powered Bobcat skid steerequipment for interior stink and air pollution control.
In response to a directive from the Safety Director, James River Paper Corp.needed to reduce air pollution in their facilities. Initially another ofour additives was used in propane powered materials handling vehicles. Thisadditive worked far better than any used before. When they converted todiesel powered Bobcat steer equipment they tried DSL-5. The Bobcats whichoperate 24 hours every day in an indoor facility are well within the parametersof the Safety Directors recommendations. The machines are traded every 10,000hours (equivalent to 500,000 road miles) and most machines have never hadinjector or fuel pump changes.
Four semi-trailer trucks used as shuttle trucks used to fuel at the motorpool and used a competitors additive. This additive proved ineffective.Since switching to DSL-5 these hard working units have experienced no fuelrelated problems. They have never had to replace a fuel injector.
There is no power or mileage data available from this study, but excellentresults have been achieved from both emission and maintenance reductionstandpoints, the primary areas of concern of James River Paper Corp.

Pennsylvania food distributor reduces winter fuelcosts and increases miles per gallon fuel consumption throughout the year.

Extremely cold temperatures in this area of Pennsylvania was causing filterplugging problems. The need to use #1 grade fuel and theuse of alcohol to take care of water problems indicates the severity ofthis climate where the this fleet of over 60 trucks operate.
No trucks except those with exterior mounted fuel filters experienced filterplugging problems and those above mentioned who had filters moved into thecab found the problem eliminated.
During the May to September period and with dilutions of 1 part per 1,000of #2 High Sulfur fuel savings amounted to between 4.2% and 2.8%. This reductionin fuel use has more than paid for the cost of the fuel additive.
No emission data is available from this customer but maintenance recordsindicate a substantial reduction in fuel related problems.

Benke Trucking has used DSL-5 for 3 years in 55 over the road trucksand nearly eliminate filter plugging.

Dose ratios of 1 part per 1,000 - #2 high sulfur fuel in winter and 1 partper 2,000 in summer has prevented plugging of all but 2 of their 55 overthe road units, and those two only experienced problems when the temperaturereached between -20°F and -30°F.
Beyond filter plugging problems being solved other benefits followed includereduced fuel related maintenance problems and a significant reduction insmoke. Soot is virtually eliminated.
The company does not try to track mileage because of air conditioning andheater usage by drivers who often keep trucks at idle in the summer andwinter months.

City of Detroit, Department of Public Works, Vehicle Management Divisionuses DSL-5 since 1986.
Detroit, automobile capital of the U.S.A., has experienced the same pollutionproblems caused by exhaust emissions that are found in many major citiesaround the world. Of course The Vehicle Management Division of the Departmentof Public Works was aware of those problems, but they had more immediateproblems.
The Vehicle Management Division had considerable problems with diesel fueljelling on cold winter mornings in their multiple thousand vehicle fleet.
After having tried most of the well known additives they found DSL-5 tobe the most effective additive available.
Prior to adopting the use of DSL-5, cold mornings often caused as many as20 to 30 vehicles being down. Since using the additive, no diesel vehicledowntime has occurred. Not one.
Engine maintenance caused by fouled injectors and carbon buildup was alsoa problem that needed to be addressed. Those problems have been eliminated.
The Superintendent of Vehicle Management reports in addition that significantreduction of exhaust smoke has occurred, helping to reduce the airborn pollutantsin the Detroit Area.
The Superintendent goes on to state that fuel related maintenance problemsare now nonexistent, fouled injectors and carbon buildup in cylinder headshas been eliminated. That diesel vehicles start better, perform better andhave better fuel economy.

The Spartan Concrete Company, Inc. of Novi, Michigan reports yearround use of DSL-5 solves fuel system related problems.
The vehicle maintenance staff of this large concrete company was experiencingnumerous problems with leaking injector seals and winter fuel gelling.
One and one half years ago they began using DSL-5 and report that fuel systemrelated problems have ceased.
They have noticed significant improvement in fuel pump seals and fuel pumplife, very little black exhaust and cleaner burning fuel, no injector clogging,no carbon buildup, and no winter related fuel problems.
They now use DSL-5 year round to help maintain a reliable fleet.

Crandell Bros. Trucking, Inc. mechanic uses DSL-5 in his own vehicleand reports greatly increased mileage.
As so often happens with satisfied users of our fuel treatments, documentationof test results by customers is difficult to obtain.
However, the head mechanic of Crandell Bros. Trucking, Inc. did keep trackof mileage in his own vehicle and reports an increase from less than 30miles per gallon to over 35 miles per gallon on his diesel which has loggedover 180,000 miles.
The drivers of the fleet which he maintains report significant power andperformance increases and they no longer complain about how the trucks arerunning.
Winter fuel related problems have been eliminated and starting on cold wintermornings is no longer a problem.
Performance and maintenance issues are no longer a problem and year rounduse is planned for the benefits easily justify the cost.
